CSEA President Danny Donohue addresses our union’s Board of Directors in Albany on July 25, 2019.

Sisters and brothers,

I love the idea that people think of Danny Donohue as the face of CSEA. Those of you who have spent any time around me know better. For years, I’ve repeated this to every union member who will listen: you wash the face of CSEA every day.

Ladies and gentlemen, the fact of the matter is that our union isn’t about me, and as important as our elected leaders and professional staff are, it’s not about them either. The real people in charge of our union are YOU… each and every member. Our leaders and staff work hard to support us, but at the end of the day, we are a member-driven union, and we need the participation of every member to make us that much better, and that much stronger.

It gives me hope for our future to see members stepping up into leadership roles. I’m also encouraged hearing the really positive results of the thousands of personal conversations we’ve had with our members over the past few years. Clearly, CSEA is not going anywhere except forward. The changes we’ve made to engage our members and be more responsive have made us stronger, proving that change can be a good thing.

That’s why I’m upbeat about other changes ahead. One of those will come from the decision I just announced to NOT seek another term as your President.

Friends, I want you to understand that this was not an easy decision to make, but I know that it is the right one for CSEA.

As I think back on my years of doing this, I will always remember fondly all the great moments we’ve shared… even the tough times, and let me tell you there were plenty of them. All the times we’ve stood together, even when we’ve disagreed, are part of what makes CSEA the best damn Union, period.

Like any organization, we can benefit from changing things up. I have full confidence that whoever YOU choose to lead us as our next president will take CSEA to even greater heights.

From my early days as a truck driver in Long Island, I quickly realized the power we could wield when we work together. I hope you will look back on my leadership and recognize that we worked together to build a better, stronger, more effective union for us all. We have faced some tough challenges, but we have come out even stronger than when I started.

I look forward to our next great chapter in CSEA’s history. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your President.

In solidarity,
