Support New York’s parks and create job demand New York state has recently committed itself to long-term investment in its park system, making sure the infrastructure and facilities of state parks is sound for years to come. There’s one thing CSEA members can do to make sure that commitment meets demand: use our parks. CSEA members across the state provide many services in the state’s park system, whether it be collecting admission fees at a park gate or maintaining and improving infrastructure and grounds. Recently, more than two dozen CSEA members received training to become solar panel installers at parks facilities across the state, giving the parks untold capacity for energy savings, and saving the state money by not having to hire contractors to do the work. (See related story, page 9) The state is showing its commitment to the system in the form of $900 million in funding for a multi-year investment in capital design and construction projects. More than half of that money is being set aside for infrastructure, much of which is maintained by CSEA members. The Adirondacks, the Catskills, the shores of two Great Lakes, Niagara Falls, and Jones Beach are just some of the world-class destinations available within a day’s drive. It’s the best entertainment value for working families, and taking advantage of our state parks is healthy and relaxing. New York’s history and natural beauty are unique in the United States, and our public spaces reflect that fact. From the Revolutionary War to the Erie Canal and beyond, New York has been home to important national history and innovation. No matter where you look, CSEA members are working to maintain and preserve the state’s important public spaces and historical landmarks. The parks won’t support themselves, though. They need visitors and use. Demand for our park system means more work for CSEA members. They will appreciate the support and use of the park system, and you will enjoy some of the most wonderful settings the country has to offer. June 2015 The Work Force 5
