Free COVID tests expanded for Medicare recipients
More than 59 million people with Medicare Part B, including people enrolled in a
Medicare Advantage plan, now have expanded access to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved COVID-19 tests.
As of April 4, 2022, Medicare recipients are eligible to get up to eight over-the-counter COVID-19 tests per calendar month at no cost from participating pharmacies
and health care providers.
This federal resource will be available
for the remainder of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The expanded
at-home
testing is
another step
by the Biden-
Harris Administration to make
COVID tests more widely available to Americans;
this is the
first time that Medicare has covered an over- the-counter test at no cost.
Under the new program, eligible Medicare recipients wishing to get
tests can show their Medicare
cards at the pharmacy or provider to get the test. Numerous pharmacy chains across the United State are participating.
The administration has previously required state Medicaid programs, insurers and group health plans to make the tests free and accessible.
Every home in the U.S. is also eligible to order two sets of four free at-home tests through visiting covidtests.gov, or calling 1-800- 232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489).
