Buffalo-Niagara Retiree Local 903 members have been volunteering at the New York State Veterans Home at Batavia. Local 903 members recently worked with Western Region Veterans Committee to provide a luncheon for veterans. Luncheons are scheduled for March 13, June 26 and Oct. 2. For more information, call Western Region Veterans Committee Chair Bob Pyjas at 716-896-1640. If you donate $5 for the residents, you will receive a free hot pad. The local, as well as Western Region retiree and working members, are also working together to raise money for Batavia Veterans Home residents to be able to attend extra outings, raising $1,500 since 2014. Ithaca Area Retirees activists recently attended the Central Region Conference. CSEA North Florida Local 952, Unit 4 (Lake & Sumter County and The Villages) collected $250 in gift cards from members and donated them to Ocala, Fla. area non-profit agency SoZo Kids to buy holiday gifts for rural poor children who live in the Ocala National Forest. The local members collected the donations at their holiday meeting on Dec. 10 at the Golden Corral in The Villages. Unit Treasurer Betty Scanlon chaired the event, along with the assistance of Unit President Joe Schlosser. Local 952 President Sarah Jones also attended the meeting and showed support. New York Metropolitan Retirees Local 910 recently hosted a veterans’ basket raffle for retirees and active CSEA Metropolitan Region members. A state Taxation and Finance (New York City) Local member won the basket. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit residents at a local veterans hospital. CSEA North Florida Retirees Local activist Delores Walker’s son, New York City Civil Court (Kings County) Judge Craig S. Walker, center, a U.S. Navy veteran who was recently named the presiding judge of the first-ever Brooklyn Misdemeanor Veterans Treatment Court. The new court specializes in connecting veterans charged in low-level misdemeanor cases to social service providers, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to receive treatment for issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, mental health and vocational training before a case is prosecuted.
