United States Census
2020
   Be Counted!
Myth VS. Fact Myth - The Census only determines how many Congressional
Representatives each state will have.
Fact - First and foremost, the Census determines how much
federal funding each state receives for health care, education, housing, transportation, and other services. Federal funding makes up more than 1/3 of the New York State Budget.
Myth - Census employees will ask for your Social Security number.
Fact - Census employees will never ask for your Social Security number, credit card number, bank account, political party affiliation, or citizenship status. It is illegal for them to disclose any personal information. If they do, they can face 5 years in jail and a $250k fine.
Myth - Immigrants are not counted.
Fact - The Constitution explicitly requires an “actual enumeration
of all persons,” including immigrants, homeless people, and refugees, regardless of citizenship. Every person not counted costs New York $2,000 per person, per year for 10 years! The 2010 Census only counted 69% of New York’s population. We need to do much better!
Myth - The only way to be counted is when a census employee comes to your door.
Fact - There are many ways to be counted! You can participate by phone, mail, or for the first time online. For those without internet access, community portals will be available at your local libraries and SUNY, CUNY and community college campuses.
   Join the
2020 U.S.
Census team
Join the 2020 U.S. Census team and be a Census taker. The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring thousands of workers to assist with this year’s Census. Census jobs offer weekly pay at competitive rates, flexible hours and paid training.
In addition, the U.S. Census Bureau is committed to hiring Census takers to work right here in your own community, including retirees. Positions are available in the field and offices across the United States and Puerto Rico.
“Retirees are the backbone of our Census team,” said Tina Williams, a field census manager at the U.S. Census Bureau, at a recent CSEA Retiree meeting. “We would like members from your own communities to help in this count.”
By becoming a Census taker, you can support your community while getting paid to do it.
