Important information about your NYSLRS Death Benefits
Editor’s Note: The following originally appeared in Fall
2022 edition of The Update, the newsletter published by the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS) for active NYSLRS members.
For most retirees, if you
die after you retire, your beneficiaries will be entitled to a post-retirement death benefit. This is a lump sum payment based on the ordinary death benefit you had before you retired and how long you have
been retired.
For more information about
post-retirement death benefits, visit the NYS Comptroller Death Benefits for Retirees web page: osc.state.ny.us/retirement/ retirees/death-benefits.
Be sure to keep your beneficiaries current. The
easiest way to do this is through Retirement Online. Sign in to your account at https://web. osc.state.ny.us/retire/sign-in. php periodically to see who you have listed and make any needed changes.
