Support in legislative budget proposals for CSEA priorities “What concerns me most about the governor’s proposed budget is where all the money’s going to come from for the infrastructure projects he has and some of the other things he’s proposed. In OPWDD, I’m concerned about a lot of the closures that nobody knows about. Where are the people from these residences going to receive services? A lot of their families are unaware until the very last minute that their loved ones are going to be moving, without real knowledge about where or what alternatives there are.” — Barry Richards, developmental assistant and CSEA activist, Central New York DDSO Local The state Senate and Assembly released their one-house budget proposals in March. These proposals lay out each house’s priorities as negotiations over the final budget ramp up. The Senate’s budget proposal shows strong support for CSEA’s priorities regarding the Office of Mental Health and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, while also rejecting Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to increase health care costs for those retiring from the state on or after Oct. 1. The Assembly’s proposal also rejects Cuomo’s retiree health care proposal and promotes a fairer tax structure. The legislature also shot down Cuomo’s proposed changes to the state’s workers’ compensation system, which would have helped employers and the business community more than injured workers.
