108th ADM: PEOPLE Awards
108th ADM: Connecting the dots: Our power in social media
The Long Island Region was presented with the PEOPLE Cup that honors the region that recruited the most new PEOPLE members. Long Island Region President Nick LaMorte accepted the award on behalf of his region. From left, LaMorte, CSEA Executive Vice President Mary E. One key to building our strength as a union is using social media to spread our message and
emphasizing the value of union membership.
Social media, including our CSEA Local 1000, region and local and unit Facebook and Twitter pages, has the potential to:
• reach tens of thousands of members and nonmembers;
• spread our message across the state — and beyond — very quickly; and
• help build our strength.
To help our members visualize
this power, we brought a New York State map — highlighting each of our union’s six regions — to our 108th Annual Delegates Meeting.
Specifically, we asked delegates to pinpoint the community they live in to represent sharing a positive union message on social media. We also invited them to return to the map later to see how each action spread across the state.
As shown on the map, our message spread widely. Each positive union comment, like or share you make matters. Stay union, stay strong!
Madison County Local 1st Vice President Karen Bright was presented with the PEOPLE Recruiter of the Year award for recruiting the most new PEOPLE members. Our members are the ‘backbone of their village’
HEMPSTEAD — CSEA Village of Hempstead Unit members go above and beyond the call of duty to provide important services to the community in which they work.
Our members were front and center at the village’s recent 375th Anniversary Celebration. The event included an official street naming ceremony to change the name of the street on which village hall is located from Nichols Court to James A. Garner Way, in honor of the village’s
first African American mayor. After the ceremony, attendees made their way to Denton Green
to enjoy food, games and musical performances.
Our members worked hard to make the event a great experience for all, with workers spending two days on details of the celebration.
Whether it was setting up and breaking down the stage, cooking food for attendees, cleaning up around the event site or heavy
lifting, our members got the job done.
“We’re the backbone of the village,” said Village of Hempstead Unit Executive Vice President Edwin “Ebo” McDowell. “Nothing could get done without us.”
