Building our union: In-person member engagement visits are back
BINGHAMTON — For the first time since 2019, CSEA recently held an in-person member engagement visit with Broome County members.
At meetings in several county departments,
including
Social
Services,
Emergency
Services and the county’s nursing home, county workers discussed workplace concerns with CSEA Broome County Unit officers, CSEA field mobilization staff, Central
Region staff and AFSCME staff. The worksite meetings
were successful, with several nonmembers becoming members and potential new activists
identified. Another
important lesson from the meetings
– a simple act of engagement of nonmembers can convert them successfully to becoming CSEA members.

Penny Gleason and Jim Gleason, former CSEA staff members
HAMBURG — CSEA is mourning the losses of retired longtime staff members Penny Gleason, 70, who passed away Jan. 13, 2023, and her husband, Jim Gleason, 79, who passed away on Jan. 23, 2023.
A Western New York native, Penny worked as a caseworker at the Wyoming County Department of Social Services, where she represented co-workers as a union officer there.
Penny first joined our union’s staff in 1984 as an organizer
based in the Central Region
before becoming a labor relations specialist in the Western Region, including representing members in
Chautauqua County.
In the mid 1990s, Penny was
elected by her peers to serve
as President of the Field Staff Association, an office she would hold for multiple terms.
According to his obituary, Jim was also a longtime CSEA labor relations specialist based in the Western Region. He was also a proud union electrician who served as president of IBEW Local #41.
Penny and Jim Gleason are survived by children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. Services for Penny were held on January 17; services for Jim were held January 26.
