SCHENECTADY — CSEA’s Capital Region membership committee held a “Strike Out Cancer” event last month bringing together over forty members for a day of bowling and fundraising. Monies raised will fund ACS’s programs for local residents in treatment like Ride to Recovery and Look Good, Feel Better. Tusten members unanimously approve deal Members of the Town of Tusten Unit in Sullivan County unanimously approved a four-year contract deal that further enhances their work lives through being part of the union. The agreement includes salary percentage increases over four years, longevity increases, stipends for lead mechanic duties, call-in pay, additional holiday time, increased personal time, and an increased clothing and boot allowance. CSEA Erie County Women’s Committee Gives Back CHEEKTOWAGA — On Feb. 1, CSEA members from the Erie County Local Women’s Committee and invited guests honored deserving charities, nonprofits and a CSEA family from the Buffalo metropolitan area. Judi Knight, the local Women’s Committee chair, served as host of the event and introduced each of the award recipients. More than $8,000 was donated at the event. Honorees were Mary Molly Shea, RN, MSN, a patient safety investigator at Erie County Medical Center who works with sexual assault victims; Dani Heferle, community liaison at Child & Family Services / Haven House; Vincent Dusch, Plymouth House/ Plymouth Crossroads and the family of CSEA member and Town of West Seneca Highway Department employee Donald F. Schultz, who passed away while doing his job. Schultz’ son son Matt attended the dinner and accepted a check on behalf of his family to help with ongoing expenses. Town of West Seneca Unit President Brian Cummins also attended the dinner. “All these groups and individuals who received financial contributions from our committee are doing amazing work,” Knight said. “The CSEA family is a very giving and loving crew — and the recipients were thrilled to receive our attention and help.” Member saves child CSEA leaders from the Southern Region are applauding a CSEA member from the Newburgh School District Unit after he recently saved a student’s life. Tommy Boyd, head custodian at Horizons on the Hudson Magnet School, was in the school cafeteria during the second graders’ lunch period when he noticed a student in distress who appeared to be unable to breathe. Boyd, who originally received choking rescue training while serving in the military, promptly delivered the Heimlich maneuver. This was the second time Boyd saved a life; he aided a choking student at Gardnertown School in 2014. CSEA activist Margaret Kiernan, who also works at Horizons, said Boyd has long been a role model for students. Long Beach solidarity LONG BEACH — CSEA City of Long Beach unit members showed their union solidarity when they joined the Long Beach School Employees Association (LBSEA) on the picket line. As of early February, the LBSEA were in the midst of negotiating a contract and had reached an impasse with the district.
