An update from CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan
on state contract negotiations Dear Brothers and Sisters:
As the contracts for all our State bargaining units approach their expiration on April 1, we’ve been receiving questions about the start of negotiations for your next contract.
Despite limitations from the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been preparing for negotiations, including selecting the members of our Negotiating Team. However, at this time when New York State has still not honored the terms of our current contract, I am not willing to head back to the table and negotiate any new contracts. We continue pursuing our legal avenues to get your 2 percent raise paid as soon as possible.
We will continue our preparations and will begin negotiations once your deferred pay raise is received. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to get you what you are owed and deserve.
In solidarity,
Mary E. Sullivan, President
Town of Clifton Park Highway Unit member Nick Brisson operates a plow in the Saratoga County town’s Country Knolls West neighborhood. Plow operators have been very busy this winter clearing roads and bridges from snow and ice making it safe for emergency vehicles and the traveling public. The best way to appreciate this excellent work is to give them the space they require to do their job safely, so they too can return home to their families without harm. (Photo by Jill Asencio)

CSEA mourns loss of former AFL-CIO President John Sweeney
CSEA is mourning the loss of former longtime AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, who passed away Feb. 1 at age 86.
Sweeney was
a New York City
native who had worked his way through the ranks of the Building Building Service Employees International Union, Local 32B, which later became Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
From 1995 to 2009, Sweeney served as president of the American
“House of Labor,” the AFL-CIO. During his tenure, he worked to boost the role of women and people of color in the labor movement and increased labor’s voice in many elections, including Presidential races. He was succeeded in the post by current AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.
CSEA’s International union, AFSCME, is of the AFL-CIO’s largest affiliates.
“In the labor movement, we consider ourselves one big family, and we mourn his loss with the rest of our union family,” said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan.
