Audiovisual Production Specialist Karen Curtiss records CSEA Town of Brookhaven Highway Unit members working on a road project.

RIDGE — CSEA Town of Brookhaven Highway Unit members recently appeared in a public service announcement (PSA) produced by the town’s Highway Department.

The ad stresses the importance of obeying the New York State Move Over Law.

The Move Over Law requires drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights, including tow trucks and maintenance vehicles, to vacate the lane closest (if safe and possible to do so) and slow to a speed that is safe, reasonable and prudent.

CSEA activist and Town of Brookhaven Laborer Chris Flaherty, who is featured in the commercial, spoke about the importance of road workers’ safety.

“As road crew [workers], we face a lot of dangers working on the roads to make them safe for you and your families,” Flaherty said in the ad. “Our gear is designed to make us visible. Please take the time to recognize that and let us get home to [our families].”

Flaherty is also very aware of the importance of the PSA.

“It was an honor to be a part of something that will keep the roads safer for people,” said Flaherty.
CSEA also had a member working behind the camera. Town of Brookhaven Audiovisual Production Specialist Karen Curtiss filmed the commercial.

The PSA is airing on local television and can also be seen on the Long Island Region, the Town of Brookhaven and the Suffolk County Police Department’s respective Facebook pages.
