Sisters and Brothers:
In my mind, one week is simply not enough to recognize your incredible contributions to our communities as public service workers.
That’s why I’m taking the whole month of May to publicly recognize you. Not only that, but to highlight the value New Yorkers receive from you and the important work you do.
As your union president, I know how dedicated you are. I regularly hear the stories about how you and your co-workers consistently put in the extra time and effort, going above and beyond the job, to deliver services to people who depend on them, not because you have to, but because you want to.
I know how much you’ve sacrificed. I’ve witnessed your incredible bravery during this past year as you continued to work, doing the essential work you do, despite the risk to you and your family. By showing up, by stepping up, you demonstrated your unwavering commitment to public service, and I hope you take pride in that. I know I do.
I know how strong you are. Not only individually, but when you join forces together with your co-workers through our union to make positive changes. I am always amazed at how much we can accomplish, from the workplace to Washington, when we come together and put our people power into action. It takes guts to do that, and you’ve shown me time and time again that you’ve got them.
I know how wonderful and caring you are. Throughout my career, I’ve seen so many examples of how we as union workers are a family that takes care of each other. We mentor and teach each other, we support each other, and we lift each other up when we go through tough times. We help each other fight back against injustices. In our work, many of us care for others, often putting their needs before our own.
As public service workers we touch people’s lives every day, in so many ways, that all too often gets taken for granted. I will keep working my hardest to remind people how much your work matters to us all. Not only that, I will make sure our union continues to showcase the amazing work you do, so that more New Yorkers realize, like I do, that your work improves our quality of life every day, around the clock.
This month and every month, I am so appreciative of your amazing work. I hope you are too. We must keep lifting each other up and working to recognize each other for our accomplishments.
