Expansion to create hundreds of good, middle-class jobs BUFFALO — A new jewel will soon rise up in the middle of Buffalo’s blighted inner city, thanks to the support of unions working together to promote and create good paying, middle class jobs. Building America, a subsidiary of the AFL-CIO’s Housing Investment Trust, is set to invest $9.2 million in the construction of a $46.3 million Clinical Sciences Center on the campus of Roswell Park Cancer Institute, a worldclass cancer center “We know that strong communities work. Good paying jobs create opportunity on many levels.” in the heart of Buffalo’s growing medical corridor. CSEA and PEF members are employed at the hospital. “This project will create 210 union construction jobs and 340 permanent CSEA and PEF positions at Roswell,” said CSEA Western Region President Flo Tripi. “Good paying, middle class jobs are important if a community is to thrive and grow. The expansion at Roswell Park and the medical corridor is needed in Buffalo and in the inner city.” The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo General Hospital and other medical and research facilities, is located in a neighborhood that has a poverty rate four times the national average and unemployment that is 1.5 times higher than the national rate. Bringing good paying, middle class jobs to that neighborhood will be good, not only for the workers, but for the entire community. Treatment, prevention services, prevention screening and mammograms will be some of the services available to people who may not otherwise receive care. CSEA members will be on the front lines, working with patients and assisting them as they receive the medical services they need. “Through the new center, Roswell employees will also be able to receive important cancer screenings right at our workplace,” said Sabrina Mitchell, an officer and chief steward with the CSEA Roswell Park Local. In addition to the Roswell Park Local, CSEA also represents Roswell Park workers in the Health Research Local. — Lynn Miller Mitchell Ellenville Regional Hospital Local ratifies contract •Building America, a subsidiary of the AFL-CIO’s Housing ELLENVILLE — Members of the private sector Ellenville Regional Hospital Local recently ratified a one-year contract. Local President Karl Pizza said the agreement was a good deal for workers and that CSEA and management reached the agreement after only two bargaining sessions.
