The Work Force Who does the governor care about? Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed state budget says a lot about his priorities … and it’s not good Schools are struggling to maintain programs; counties, towns and villages are struggling to maintain essential services; state operations are strained and critical programs for the poor, hungry and sick are cut. But the governor’s proposal gives millionaires, billionaires and bankers a windfall. Just who does the governor care about? The governor’s complicated property tax freeze that even the tax commissioner can’t explain, would further shortchange local governments leading to more job cuts without providing taxpayers any relief. Unprecedented poverty means nearly half the children in communities across the state go to bed hungry every night. New Yorkers are hurting and need good jobs but the state budget speeds up our race to the bottom. But take a good look at the governor’s budget priorities: • Super-wealthy families get a $750 million inheritance tax break. • Wall Street banks get a $350 million deal. It’s not right — the needs of people and struggling communities should come before special deals for the favored few. Call your state legislators today and tell them: New York can do better — with a budget that works for all of us.
