The Work Force Strong communities work “CSEA members must rise to the occasion to stand for good jobs and strong communities.” Every now and then, someone will refer to CSEA as a special interest. It shows how little they really understand about who we are in CSEA. There is no organization of any kind that is more representative of New Yorkers than CSEA. Our membership is as diverse as our state. CSEA members do every kind of job and we work and live in every part of New York. We earn our paychecks delivering needed services every day and we pay our taxes to support our community. More importantly, we contribute time, talent and resources off the job to make our communities better places to live. For more than 100 years, CSEA has grown into New York’s leading union by truly weaving the threads of our dedication and commitment into the fabric of our communities. But today that fabric is fraying in far too many New York communities — in large part due to poor choices by business and elected officials that value profits and power over people and fairness. This is a critical time for our future. CSEA members must rise to the occasion to stand for good jobs and strong communities. It’s not enough for us to stand together in solidarity with our CSEA brothers and sisters or even our family, friends and neighbors in other unions. The challenges we face are too great and we must forge broad, deep alliances in our communities if we are to succeed. Economic inequality is at its widest point since before the Great Depression and the inequality is growing greater. It is up to us to reach out to fairminded people who will work with us to change the direction of our state and nation through economic justice.
