YONKERS — As a child, Alvina (Mae) Tyropolis watched as her father suffered harassment and violence as a Depression-era labor organizer in the Bronx.
Adding to her
union education
were her uncles,
who were Tammany Hall political workers. Meanwhile, Tyropolis’ mother, a first-generation American, balanced work and community efforts while raising her family.
Tyropolis’ strong labor background and desire to help others led to her own career in CSEA activism that spans nearly a half century.
CSEA Westchester Retirees Local 921 members recently honored Tyropolis for her service to our union. Serving most recently as treasurer of her retiree local, Tyropolis opted not to run for re-election to office.
A graduate of Walton High School and
Spence Junior College in New York City, where she received an associate’s degree in business administration, Tyropolis married and moved to Yonkers in 1960.
Tyropolis became active in the Parents and Teachers’ Association (PTA), helping advance libraries in Yonkers.
In the early 1970s, Tyropolis was hired at the Yonkers Public Schools as a registered records management officer and soon joined CSEA.
She applied her labor background and professional skills to become an activist in CSEA. Tyropolis served on her unit’s executive board and became president of the Yonkers Public School Unit in 1992.
During her 10-year tenure as local president, Tyropolis helped lead efforts to secure raises, add titles and boost benefits for unit members. She also helped lead our union’s efforts to sustain our members’ jobs and benefits as the district faced financial difficulties.
In 2002, Tyropolis retired and soon joined the Westchester Retirees Local 921, serving as local treasurer from 2013 until this year.
