As this edition went to press, nursing home residents and frontline health care workers were being offered the COVID-19 vaccine. New York initially got about 170,000 doses, which were distributed throughout the state based on population.
Health care experts believe that vaccines, when safely administered, are a helpful part of an infection control plan that should also include education, ventilation and other engineering
controls, cleaning and disinfection, personal protective equipment and safe work procedures. Experts also urge people to continue wearing masks or face coverings, practice social distancing and avoid gatherings.
