The Social Security Administration (SSA) noted that the benefit increases began in January 2023.
The record-high benefit increase was put into place to
receive Social Security benefits, with the majority of recipients being retirees. Established in 1935 to give older Americans a safety net amid the Great Depression, Social Security is considered the most successful anti-poverty program in U.S. history.
BRAINARD — CSEA is mourning the loss of longtime Capital Region activist Marie McArdle, who passed away Nov. 12, 2022.
She was 60.
McArdle
McArdle retired in 2017 and joined CSEA Capital District Retirees Local 999.
McArdle will be remembered
for her strong work ethic, caring nature and dedication to CSEA members that continued into her retirement. She also loved animals, especially her “fur babies,” including her German Shepherds, Blue and Star.
McArdle is survived by her mother, son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren as well as a large extended family of siblings, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Services were held Nov. 19, 2022.

McArdle served
as president of our union’s Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Local from 2006 to 2017, as well as in numerous local leadership roles before being elected president.
At the state DCJS, McArdle had worked as an identification specialist 2 and later as supervisor of the Juvenile Unit.

BELLMORE — CSEA is mourning the loss of Nassau Area Retirees Local 919 2nd Vice President Jesse Hunt, who passed away in July 2022. He was 73.
Before retiring
in 2002, Hunt had
been a longtime employee of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and was based at Jones Beach State Park.
According to his obituary, Hunt
proudly served in the New York Army National Guard for 30 years, including service following the Sept. 11 attacks.
From 2004 until his passing, Hunt served as the Local 919 2nd Vice President.
Hunt was also active in his church and enjoyed swimming, chess and reading. He also loved to sing, and performed as the lead singer of a local band during high school. He is survived by siblings, cousins and nieces and nephews.
QUEENS — CSEA is mourning the loss of New York Metropolitan Retirees Local 910 3rd Vice President Lelia Hoskins, who passed away Oct. 7, 2022.

Hoskins had been a longtime Creedmoor Psychiatric Center Local activist, including serving in local vice president and treasurer positions before retiring in 2017.
In 2021, she was elected as Local 910’s 3rd Vice President.
