Celebrating
Black History
Month
UNIONDALE — CSEA members and guests filled the room for the Nassau County Department of Social Services Unit’s annual Black History Month program.
Unit members were involved in planning the event and worked every aspect of it, including staffing tables discussing Black History, serving as the masters of ceremonies and providing dinner.
There was also a special performance from workers, who formed a dance group and performed to the delight of colleagues, family and friends in attendance.
In addition, there were African art displays, as well as art creations from workers.
Other CSEA members were presented with citations for their outstanding philanthropic and professional contributions to the community.
Black History Month originated in the United States, before being recognized in other parts of the world, to honor the contributions of Black people throughout history, which are often overlooked when studying and reflecting on history as a whole.

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity perform a step show at the event. The fraternity was founded in Ithaca and counts civil rights leader The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall as members.
