CSEA takes lead on stopping Summit Park closure POMONA — Fearing the health and well-being of the remaining residents at the Summit Park Hospital & Nursing Care Center, CSEA has filed a lawsuit in state Supreme Court challenging Rockland County Executive Ed Day’s authority in closing the county-owned nursing home and hospital. Day’s abrupt closure plan has devastated CSEA members, who are worried most about their residents. “Here, you’re not a patient, you’re a resident,” said Jeannie Destin, a certified nursing assistant at Summit Park for 27 years. “More of these residents are going to die. They are used to us. Some of us they know by our voice, by our perfume. Now, when I come to my floor for work and see it emptying out, I feel sad. This has been their home.” The lawsuit, in which Southern Region President Billy Riccaldo serves as plaintiff with the union, charges that the county charter does not allow Day to unilaterally close Summit Park. After a deal with a buyer recently fell through, Day announced plans to close Summit Park by Dec. 31. A judge is slated to hear the case Dec. 4. “We have seen the devastating impact that the county executive’s heartless plan has had on the residents,” said Riccaldo, citing an article in the weekly newspaper Our Town that reported seven deaths of former Summit Park residents in just a few weeks since their relocation to other nursing homes. “It is also our job as a union to protect the jobs and livelihoods of our members working at Summit Park. Given that Mr. Day spent his entire professional career enforcing the law, it is outrageous to think that we wouldn’t fight back when he is now blatantly violating the county charter and trying to dispose of an important county resource.” — Jessica Ladlee “This award motivates me,” said Kramer. “It’s good for our unit members to see that we’re achieving great things, we’re going for 100 percent.” By her own admission, Kramer used to be very apathetic about the union. Then, one day she realized that if she wanted change to happen, she had to get involved. From that point on, she hit the ground running. She made it her duty to get out and speak to other members, to let them know what being a part of CSEA could mean for them. “After I explained to them how being part of a union could change their lives, they wanted to join,” said Kramer. Kramer also likes to give credit to her local president, Jerry Laricchiuta for being so supportive. “Jerry is a great mentor,” said Kramer. “He cheers for me every time I bring in a new package of signed membership papers.” For her future plans, Kramer wants to form a membership committee to help her sign up new members. She hopes to have a good group of people by the beginning of the year. At that point, she’ll really be able to steamroll ahead. Kramer said she is floored by her recognition. There are so many people working hard on behalf of CSEA members that she can’t believe that she stood out. “It means a lot to be recognized in such a big union,” said Kramer. “I really believe in CSEA. It gives us the opportunity to improve our lives. — Wendi Bowie Take advantage of your CSEA membership for a special discount for SU Basketball® Home Games at the Carrier Dome® in Syracuse!
