12 The Work Force June 2024
CSEA members across the state participated in
Workers Memorial Day observances in late April
and May to remember all of those who were lost or
severely injured while doing their jobs.
During the past year, these CSEA members passed
away while doing their jobs:
•
Theresa Steele, a bus and cafeteria monitor at
the Mexico Central School District in Oswego
County, passed away on March 22, 2023, from
injuries sustained in a bus accident while on
the job.
•
Aaron Peters, a park and recreation aide at
the Niagara State Park Commission, passed
away on Jan. 17, 2024, while involved in tree
removal at Golden Hill State Park.
During Workers Memorial Day, observed on April
28, unions around the world remember and honor
those who have lost their lives or become seriously
injured while on the job. It is a sobering reminder of
the importance of workplace safety. The day is also
used as an opportunity for our union to recommit to
our ongoing fight for safe and healthy workplaces.
Workers Memorial Day was first observed by the
AFL-CIO in 1989. April 28 was chosen as the date for
Workers Memorial Day because it is the anniversary
of the 1970 passage of the federal Occupational
Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
