WADING RIVER — Suffolk Educational Local 870 members recently learned more about challenges facing our union and more at the local’s recent 8th annual School District Membership Conference.

The local even held a workshop that explained the pitfalls of having a state constitutional convention in the “What is a Constitutional Convention. Stand up. Don’t Sit-Never Quit.” If you value your pension and union benefits, it was a workshop you didn’t want to miss.

Other workshops, including “Managing Your Money in Tough Times,” “Is My Title Correct” and “Retirement,” members learned practical skills that will help them at work and at home.

Other sessions, such as “Bullying and Violence in the Workplace” and “Communication: Deflect, Disarm and Defuse Verbal Conflict,” helped give attendees the tools they need to navigate through interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

The Local 870 workshop continues to be a wonderful example of what happens when members come together seeking educational opportunities and solidarity. Next time the local offers one, consider going. It’s a great place to make professional contacts as well as hone your leadership skills.
