HUNTINGTON — George Dobler is well aware of the long road activists have ahead of them now that the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Janus v. AFSCME Council 31.

Dobler, president of the Huntington Public Library Unit, is working hard to ensure that working people have a voice.

For his efforts, Dobler was named the PEOPLE Recruiter of the Month for September, recruiting 12 new PEOPLE members at the MVP level. “Defending our union rights against the top 1 percent is like David vs Goliath,” said Dobler. “Being a part of PEOPLE is our strength and the way that we push back at the corporations that are trying to take away our benefits and right to bargain.”

Organization also plays an important part in Dobler’s recruiting skills. He keeps a ledger with the names of members that contribute to PEOPLE, which distinguishes between MVP contributor and non-MVP contributors.

This way, next year, he can follow up with those who have not chosen to be MVP in hopes that they are willing to change their minds.

Never one to waste an opportunity, Dobler has set up a PEOPLE desk in front of the CSEA unit office at the Huntington Public Library.

He also plans to volunteer to travel around the Long Island Region to recruit PEOPLE members with Denise Felt, CSEA’s Statewide PEOPLE coordinator.

It’s important to Dobler that everyone knows just how important their contribution is.

“No one should ever think that their offering doesn’t mean much,” said Dobler. “We have nearly 300,000 members. If every person gave $5 per month, that would be a lot of money for us to use to lobby in Washington.”
