BROOKHAVEN — CSEA members and Brookhaven town officials recently honored Fire Marshall Michael Seymour for recently rescuing a 3 year-old boy from imminent danger.
On the day of the incident, Seymour was working the night shift and driving near a busy intersection in Medford when he noticed the boy wandering the busy street with no shoes or coat on.
Realizing the child was in danger, Seymour pulled over to speak to him. Despite a language barrier, Seymour managed to earn enough of the boy’s trust to get the child to sit with him in the town vehicle that Seymour was driving.
In an attempt to calm the boy, who was very upset, Seymour let him watch videos on an iPad.
At that point, Seymour contacted the Suffolk County Police Department. Multiple units of officers and the Medford Volunteer Ambulance Corp. members, searched the area for the child’s home and parents.
In about a half hour, the boy’s parents were found.
According to town officials, the parents left the boy with an older sibling who left the child alone momentarily so she could take a shower. It was then that the boy wandered away from the home.
Brookhaven town officials presented Marshall with a special commendation for his efforts.
While some people might call Seymour a hero, he doesn’t seem too impressed with his generous act.
“I don’t have much to say other than it was a case of being in the right place at the right time,” Seymour said. “I expect that any employee would stop for a lost child.”
