EAST HAMPTON — Town of East Hampton Unit members provide many vital public services that keep the community running smoothly.

No matter where you go in the town, you can find our unit’s nearly 300 members working hard.
Unit members’ skill sets are particularly important during major events like the annual Montauk Friends of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“Two days before the parade, members from the Buildings and Grounds Department, along with the Custodial Department, remove debris and set up bleachers,” said Thomas Baker, a Town of East Hampton Unit member and an assistant chief fire marshal. “The crew also makes sure the public rest rooms are in working order. They stay on through the duration of the parade to ensure that the facilities remain clean and functioning properly.”

Highway Department members also are there to keep the roads free of litter. There is also an electrician present to address issue with street lighting.

Not to be outdone, motor pool workers service town vehicles, ensuring there won’t be any issues with the town employees’ transportation throughout the day.

“The fire marshals and code enforcement officers are assigned to address quality of life issues during the day of the parade to ensure this event stays family friendly and everyone has a good time.” said Baker.

After the parade, members work with the Ordinance Enforcement Office and town police to ensure that town streets and businesses remain orderly.

Once the public clears out, the cleanup begins.

Members gather street barriers that were used to block off the parade route and take them to a storage facility in Montauk. The next day, members return the equipment to the home facilities.

Town of East Hampton Unit President Miles Maier is very proud of our members’ exemplary effort.

“Our members from multiple town departments did an excellent job working with numerous agencies to make sure the St. Patrick’s Day Parade went smoothly and that all who attended were safe and enjoyed the parade,” said Maier. “The fact that the parade had no reported incidents is a testament to their hard work.”
