COMMACK — Three children of Long Island Region members have been presented with statewide scholarships.

Nicole Niemiec, whose mother, Andrea Niemiec, is a teacher’s assistant at the Bayport-Blue Point Schools;

Matthew V. Pecoraro, whose mother, Lois Pecoraro, is a food server at the North Babylon Union Free School District and Joseph Sammartano, whose mother, Jennifer Sammartano, is a principal typist-clerk at Oceanside UFSD, all received CSEA’s $1,000 Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarship, which awarded annually to 18 (three in each region) graduating high school seniors who are the dependents of CSEA members.

Skylar Hasseck, whose mother, Wanda Hasseck, is a school monitor at the Bellmore Public Schools, received our union’s $2,500 Pearl Insurance Scholarship.

Flaumenbaum, a longtime CSEA activist, was serving as the Long Island Region President and an AFSCME International Vice President at the time of his death in 1980.
