GARDEN CITY — We are mourning the loss of CSEA Nassau County Local 5th Vice President Gary Volpe, 59, who passed away suddenly on July 28 from injuries in an ATV accident.
Volpe, a dispatcher and 911 operator, had served our union in several leadership roles in the Nassau County Local over the past 22 years.
In addition to his local leadership role, he was serving as president of the local’s Police Communications Operators Unit. Volpe was also known for his work in ensuring adequate staffing and other workplace safety issues at the county’s emergency call center. He was also a leading voice in ensuring equal pay for the county’s female operators, helping organize a successful class-action suit against the county.
“Our union has lost a strong advocate for worker safety and fairness,” CSEA President Danny Donohue said.
“Gary worked nonstop to improve conditions for our members, and we extend our sincere condolences to his loved ones, including his co-workers.”
