MASTIC BEACH — William Floyd School District Clerical Unit members recently held their first school supply drive, continuing CSEA’s long tradition of giving back to our communities.
All donations were given to “Billy’s Closet,” which is a storage room maintained by the district, where donated school supplies, clothes, shoes and coats are held for local children in need.
The closet is named in honor of the district’s mascot, Billy, which portrays district namesake and Declaration of Independence signer William Floyd.
CSEA William Floyd School District Unit President Dawn Mitternado said she is happy with the generosity of unit members.
“I’m very pleased with the success of our first event,” Mitterando said. “We collected four bins filled with donated items and about 20 backpacks.”
This year’s school supply is just the first of many philanthropic endeavors to come.
“We definitely plan on making this an annual event,” Mitterando said. “I’m also planning a highway cleanup; we’ll pick a road in the school district, and unit members and other volunteers will clean up the area.”
It’s unit members’ personal attachments to the district that motivates them to do more for the community.
“Many of us live in this community, so the William Floyd School District is near and dear to our hearts,” Mitterando said.
