James Williams accepts the Chancellor’s award at a recent hospital board meeting.

STONY BROOK — CSEA SUNY Stony Brook Local 614 member James Williams has been honored with the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service by the State University of New York.

In order to be recognized, a Classified Service worker must be unwavering in his or her ability to show excellence in assigned job duties and go above and beyond expectations.

Williams was nominated for the award by a doctor who witnessed Williams’ hard work and diligence in his roles as hospital concierge and patient and guest relations.

Williams was presented with an award, as well as Stony Brook University swag, at a recent hospital directors meeting.

While accepting the commendation, Williams mentioned what motivates him to perform his job duties in an exemplary way.

“I like the words of the esteemed African-American writer James Baldwin, who said, ‘If you’re treated a certain way, you become a certain kind of person. If certain things are described to you as being real, they’re real for you whether they are real or not.’ So, how we interact with people can have a great impact,” said Williams. “I have been at other health care facilities and while my exam went well, what I recall is the smile I got at the front desk and the pleasant way in which I was greeted by the employee who asked if I needed help.”

“I strive to be the person who is kind, compassionate and acknowledges everyone regardless of their station in life and who generates a positive experience,” said Williams.

Williams will be formally honored at the Annual University Awards Dinner, as well as recognized in various Stony Brook hospital and university publications.
