COMMACK — As CSEA’s power grows, so does our membership, which is why our union offers a new member orientation workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to educate existing members on how to successfully introduce new members to the benefits of union membership.
As part of the workshop, attendees reviewed the contents of CSEA’s new member packet and discussed their past experiences as new members. The exercise reminded attendees how overwhelming it can seem to learn about an organization as vast as CSEA.
Other topics discussed included the importance of shop stewards, personalizing new member orientation to your specific local or unit and the importance of including new member orientation in your contract.
A big topic of conversation was the major role CSEA played in the changes made to the Taylor Law, which state that union representatives have the right to sit with new employees for 30 minutes to acquaint new employees with the union at their job site.
The changes to the Taylor Law were made in response to the Supreme Court Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 decision. Workshop attendees intend on taking their newly acquired knowledge back to their units and locals where they can adopt changes to the current new member orientation procedures.
