This past year we mourn for three individuals, George Grumbach, Jarred Newallo and Christopher Polomcean. They were doing their jobs serving the public and didn’t come home from work. You can read about them on page 3 of this edition. More importantly, you can join with CSEA in speaking out for safer worksites and fighting for the living. Some jobs are more dangerous than others, but there are always things that can reduce the risk. Thirty-five years ago CSEA was instrumental in establishing the Public Employee Safety and Health (PESH) Act, providing worker protection by law in New York state. It serves as the national model in ensuring that public workers are not treated like second-class citizens when it comes to on-the–job protections. But about half the states in America do not have safety and health protections for public workers, and many are further eroding worker rights. Safety and health protection is no accident. It begins with a law that defines employer responsibility to provide a safe workplace. It also means an ongoing commitment to a safe environment, properly designing the work, and providing appropriate training and equipment. And it requires constant vigilance. CSEA has unwavering commitment to safe worksites and has some of the best safety and health activists, staff and resources you will find anywhere. Read about them throughout this edition of The Work Force. Join with us so that all of our family, friends and co-workers can go home safely at the end of each workday. 4 The Work Force April 2015
