Scholarships help our members’ children build strong futures
CSEA’s statewide college scholarships are available!
Graduating high school seniors who are dependents of CSEA active members are eligible to apply for and win one of our union’s statewide college scholarships.
CSEA awards 18 $1,000 Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarships (three in each region) every year.
Applicants are also considered for the one-time, $2,500 scholarships sponsored by Pearl Insurance and MetLife.
In addition, eligible applicants are considered for the J.J. Kelly Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to students who are the children of CSEA members killed or permanently disabled as a result of their jobs, or who died while an active CSEA member.
The 2020 application is available at cseany.org
CORNWALL — When Jack Byrne headed to Binghamton University last fall with plans to pursue a career in medicine, he did so knowing our union was helping him work toward his dream.
That’s because of the generous scholarship programs he was eligible to apply for because his mother, Kay Byrne, is a member of our Cornwall Central School District Unit.
Not only did Jack earn one of our coveted Irving Flaumenbaum Memorial Scholarships, which awards $1,000 to 18 graduating seniors across the state, he was also one of four students receiving scholarships awarded by our Southern Region.
Jack Byrne graduated toward the top of his class at Cornwall Central High School, earned his Eagle Scout rank in scouting after completing needed renovations at the Hudson Valley SPCA, and worked part time in local restaurants, among other activities.
Kay Byrne, a custodian at Cornwall Central Middle School, said her family is extremely grateful for the scholarships, as well as the many other benefits we offer our members on top of what’s negotiated in our union contracts.
“My son was very skeptical that he would win, but I convinced him that he has as good a chance as anybody,” said Byrne, a native of England who noted that although neither she nor her husband attended college, they have hopes of higher education for their children.
“Jack, with the help of a scholarship, now has the opportunity for higher education. With him trying so hard through all his school years, it is very well deserved.”
Kay Byrne said that in addition to appreciating the excellent medical insurance, dental and vision plans through the CSEA Employee Benefit Fund, and access to Pearl Insurance programs, she often checks to
see where she might save money through our Member Benefits Department.
“Before I book a vacation or
rent a car, I check the companies included in the emails I receive from CSEA,” said Byrne. “I would advise everyone to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available, whether it is for you or your children. Our union has so much to offer.”
