Strong Communities Work CSEA began 2014 exposing the impact of poor budget choices on people and communities, and ended the year renewing our commitment to build strong communities. CSEA’s Strong Communities Work initiative gained momentum during the year as union members worked with allies in our communities to fight the good fight on issues that are important to all of us. In the state budget fight, for example, CSEA helped build an unprecedented coalition of community, religious and labor organizations to push back against bad state policies that would have undermined people, services and communities and widened New York’s income inequality gap even further. While working to make our communities better for everyone who lives in them, CSEA also carried on the day-to-day fight to protect jobs, win fair contracts and improve working conditions for our members. CSEA successfully fought back the governor’s push to undercut mental health and developmental disabilities services and reached an agreement with state lawmakers that promises to ensure a future role for state employees who have consistently provided care with compassion and professionalism.
