Working people are under attack. While a recent national poll shows a healthy majority of Americans view unions favorably, there continues to be a disconnect in recognizing that a union could help them in their own workplace, even as their rights, benefits and pay continue to erode. It shouldn’t be a surprise that some people are confused because there is so much misinformation thrown around about unions every day. CSEA works hard to present the facts and counter the nonsense, but it is a struggle. Often, actions speak louder than words. Some of the best ways to respond to distorted arguements is to show how CSEA members bring value to the community. Two examples are highlighted in this edition of The Work Force. CSEA has a focus on promoting safety and health in the workplace. Our peer-to-peer training effort shows the union at its best. Management turns to CSEA in many places to deliver the knowledge and skills to get important jobs done safely and efficiently. A dedicated group of activists comes together to share their knowledge and hands-on experience with their union brothers and sisters, who can then bring it back to their workplace. It saves money and it saves lives, and it is being expanded across New York (see pages 9, 10 and 11). Nassau County’s success using its own work force to contract-in a recent construction project (see page 3) is another great example. It shows the union working cooperatively to get an important job done cost-effectively with less upheaval and in shorter time. These are just some of the ways we build union power. CSEA members should be proud to be part of union that has a tradition of doing good and trying to do better by bringing people together. When we stand together, the union makes us strong. 4 The Work Force October 2015
