In addition to voting on candidates, New York voters will decide on Proposition 1, known as the “equal rights” amendment.
CSEA supports Proposition 1, which would amend the New York State Constitution to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy. It also protects against unequal treatment based on reproductive health care and autonomy.
Contrary to the misinformation being peddled by opponents, these provisions are already protected in state law; the Proposition would simply enshrine existing law in the State Constitution.
The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) was passed in 2019, which codified protections for gender identity and expression into law, while the Reproductive Health Act, also passed in 2019, protects abortion rights.
CSEA passed a resolution supporting this legislation at our union’s recent 114th Annual Delegates Meeting, and our union is committed to protecting all individuals from discrimination, as well as supporting and advocating for equal protection and justice for all New Yorkers.
Proposition 1 appears on the other side of your ballot, so don’t forget to flip it over and vote YES!
