1. Senate Adjourns
At around 4:30 a.m. this morning, the New York State Senate adjourned the 2025 legislative session. However, the Assembly met today and will return on Monday and Tuesday of next week. We were successful in getting several CSEA-priority bills passed both houses, including bills to reduce staffing requirements for home-based child care providers and to ensure that current and prospective public employees are provided information about salary, job responsibilities and other details that allow them to make informed employment decisions. We’re continuing to work to get additional bills passed the Assembly in the coming days. We will provide a full update on our end-of-session victories next week.
2. Protecting Highway Workers
This week, three union members employed by the State Department of Transportation were struck by a vehicle while working in a work zone in Hornell, NY. This comes less than two weeks after the death of DOT worker and CSEA Unit President Robert Bornt, who was killed in a similar work zone crash. Now, more than ever, we need the State Legislature to act to protect these workers. We’re calling on the State Assembly to pass A.4016 (Magnarelli), which would increase penalties for failing to comply with the state’s Move Over Law. There’s only a few days left in the 2025 Legislative Session, and we need your help getting this bill over the finish line! Send a letter to your legislators urging them to pass this bill!
3. Early Voting
Early voting for local government primary elections begins tomorrow, June 14, and runs through June 22. You can also vote on primary day, June 24. Tomorrow is also the last day to register to vote! Register to vote, check your registration and see CSEA’s endorsed candidates here. CSEA has endorsed several candidates in Regions 2, 3, 5, and 6 — make sure to check your local Board of Elections website to learn about the races in your area.
4. Federal Budget Update
The U.S. Senate continues to craft their version of the federal budget, and aims to vote on a package by July 4. Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office published a report on the anticipated impacts of the U.S. House reconciliation bill, which shows that the provisions of the bill, particularly the extension of the 2017 tax cuts, would result in losses of about $1,600 per year for the lowest income households, while increasing incomes for the highest earners by more than $12,000. CSEA is continuing to fight back against this budget. You can join the fight by becoming a federal advocate here.
5. Next Week
The State Assembly will meet on Monday and Tuesday. This will conclude the 2025 NYS Legislative Session.
