1. CSEA-Supported Bills Make Progress
Several CSEA-supported bills made progress this week, including:
- A.8295/S.7599 (Otis/Gonzalez): Protects local government and SUNY employees from displacement due to Artificial Intelligence. This builds on protections that were passed last year for employees of state agencies and authorities.
- A.8223/S.7559 (Otis/Gonzalez): Expands the Workplace Violence Law to ensure that public employees are better protected at work.
- A.4016/S.4649 (Magnarelli/Cooney): Increases penalties for violating the state’s Move Over Law. This will deter reckless driving that threatens highway workers and first responders.
- A.4003/S.4929 (Clark/Brouk): Increases the number of children that home-based childcare providers can care for.
- A.7596/S.6753 (Rivera/Brisport): Sets caseload caps for foster care caseworkers at no more than 16 cases per month.
- A.456/S.7318 (Hevesi/Brisport): Sets caseload caps for Child Protective Services caseworkers at no more than two initial investigations per week.
2. NLRB Firing Upheld
In January, President Trump fired Gwynne Wilcox from her position at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which is the agency responsible for protecting the rights of employees to organize and unionize. Wilcox sued, arguing that her dismissal violated federal law that only permits removal of Board members for “neglect of duty or malfeasance.” On May 22, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay on a lower court’s decision to permit the firing. Because Wilcox is unable to return to work, the NLRB is left without a quorum, preventing them from issuing decisions.
Primary day for local elections is on June 24! The last day to register is June 14. Register to vote, check your registration and see CSEA’s endorsed candidates here. Local elections decide who makes decisions about public services, schools, infrastructure, and who sits across from us at the bargaining table. CSEA members can have an outsized impact in these elections, so don’t forget to vote!
