Coto killer sentenced

At left, CSEA Westchester County Unit member Christine Leone, who was one of CSEA Westchester County Unit member Maria Coto’s supervisors at the county Department of Social Services and a close friend, shares her thoughts following the sentencing of Maria’s killer. At right are Westchester County Local President Hattie Adams and local Executive Vice President Chris Franks.

WHITE PLAINS — The long-awaited verdict in Maria’s murder was handed down January 8 in Westchester County Supreme Court, with Hasseem Jenkins receiving a sentence of 23 years to life in state prison.

Our union sister died last year after being brutally attacked while working as a senior child protective services caseworker in Peekskill. The Westchester County Local sponsored a vigil outside the courthouse following the sentencing, where CSEA leaders, Maria’s co-workers and Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace were among the speakers.

Our union is continuing to work with state lawmakers to advance legislation to improve caseworker safety.

CSEA member Anthony Christie, a supervisor in the Westchester County Department of Social Services who also serves as a pastor in his community, offers a blessing in memory of Maria Coto during the vigil.
