Building our union by investing in members

BUFFALO — CSEA Roswell Park Memorial Institute Local officers continue to invest in members’ futures while strengthening engagement in the workplace.

Each year, the local awards scholarships through its own application process, encouraging members to share their educational goals as well as ideas to strengthen union involvement.

Last year, one applicant suggested that CSEA needed to be more visible at Roswell.

Leadership listened and now hosts a monthly information table outside the hospital cafeteria to connect directly with members.

The increased visibility appears to be making an impact. While the program typically receives only a few applications, 13 members applied this year, allowing the local to award six scholarships.

Among the recipients:

Cronkhite

Ashley Cronkhite, a licensed practical nurse in the Donor Center and member since September 2004, is enrolled in Genesee Community College’sLPN-to-RN program.

“I would like to sincerely thank CSEA for helping me to continue my education by awarding me this scholarship,” said Cronkhite.

Bittner

Emily Bittner, who works in the Ambulatory Surgery Center, is pursuing her Surgical Technology degree and will graduate this May.

“I love working in the OR [operating room] and helping change people’s lives daily,” said Bittner.

Carpenter

Taylor “Tay” Carpenter is majoring in health care studies and plans to continue earning a bachelor’s degree with the goal of becoming a health care administrator.

“I’m grateful for this scholarship opportunity granted by CSEA and can’t wait to see what the future holds,” said Carpenter.

By investing in members’ educational advancement and responding to their ideas, CSEA Roswell Park Memorial Institute Local officers are strengthening both opportunity and union presence within the workplace.
