COMMACK — CSEA Long Island Region 1 President John Mooney has been a CSEA activist for more than 30 years. His dedication to leaving a lasting impact on the lives of CSEA members has been his goal since he first became CSEA City of Long Beach Unit president 18 years ago.
In his time as Long Beach Unit president, Mooney helped to save more than 20 members’ jobs when the city laid them off following the COVID-19 pandemic. Mooney led a drive-thru rally of more than 100 cars around Long Beach, ending at City Hall. The event captured local media coverage, and the public display applied strategic pressure needed to get members rehired.
Mooney has also served as CSEA Nassau County Municipal Employees Local treasurer for seven years, representing 74 municipalities with more than 3,000 members and winning five wrongful termination cases.
An experienced organizer, Mooney has worked closely with CSEA’s Organizing Department to establish CSEA’s Long Beach Housing Authority Unit; full-time and part-time Long Beach lifeguard units; CSEA Long Beach Sanitary Districts; and the Oceanside Fire District, adding well over 500 new members to our union family.
Mooney also supports and empowers union workers outside of CSEA. He has coordinated collective actions for striking labor unions, including Verizon, Clare Rose and the Long Beach School Education Association.
In March 2024, Mooney was elected CSEA Long Island Region executive vice president. In May 2026, he became CSEA Long Island Region president after former region President Jarvis T. Brown became CSEA executive vice president. As region president, Mooney represents more than 45,000 members.
Mooney continues his pursuit of equality and equity for all as a Long Island Federation of Labor vice president and as a member of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.
Mooney is a dedicated advocate who will continue to make a difference in the lives of others as CSEA Long Island Region president.
