This July 4, our nation will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. For two and a half centuries, the people of this country have been writing a story generations in the making. A story of freedom, opportunity, perseverance and the belief that anyone can build something greater than themselves.
It is a story worth celebrating. But it is also a story that has never been perfect.
The ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence promised liberty and equality, yet many Americans were denied those rights, and some continue to struggle for them today. Working people endured dangerous conditions, poverty wages and exploitation. Women have long fought for a voice. Many others face discrimination because of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or background.
The story of America is not one of perfection. It is one of progress.
Time and again, generations of Americans have looked at our nation’s shortcomings and chosen not to give up on the promise of this country, but to work together to make it better. That spirit helped build the labor movement. It led workers to fight for safer workplaces, fair wages, pensions, health care and dignity on the job.
Every day, CSEA members contribute to that ongoing story. Whether you care for vulnerable New Yorkers, keep our communities safe, maintain our roads, educate our children, protect public health or provide countless other essential services, your work strengthens the foundation of our democracy and improves the lives of others.
The scars of our past remain visible. Some challenges remain unresolved. But what has always made America exceptional is our ability to keep moving forward. As we celebrate this historic anniversary, take a moment to reflect not only on where our nation has been, but where we want it to go. The next chapter of the American story will be written by people like you.
I hope you enjoy a safe and memorable Fourth of July with family and friends.
