John Mooney has been an engaged and committed CSEA member for 34 years. He is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of CSEA members for no other reason than because it is the right thing to do.
Mooney has been a strong activist on many levels of CSEA, including serving as CSEA Long Island Region 1 Executive Vice President, and CSEA Nassau County Municipal Employees Local 882 Treasurer, but he is best known as the CSEA City of Long Beach Unit President, where his leadership after Hurricane Sandy and the heroic work of his members led to Long Beach’s recovery from a devastating storm. Mooney also helped save more than 20 members’ jobs after layoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading more than 100 cars in a drive-thru rally around Long Beach, while also supervising a letter-writing campaign, sending emails, and meeting with city officials.
As a member of the CSEA Nassau County Municipal Employees Local board, Mooney represented 74 municipalities with more than 3,000 members, assisted in negotiating three contracts and won five wrongful termination cases.
Mooney’s activism does not end with CSEA. He also champions the rights of other union workers. He initiated and helped mobilize participants for rallies for supporting striking labor unions, including the Verizon, Clare Rose, and the Long Beach School Education Association (LBSEA) in 2014.
He has also held a hurricane relief concert on the beach to raise money for people affected by storms inFlorida, Texas, and Puerto Rico. Additionally, Mooney helped to organize the Long Beach trucks and first responders who traveled upstate to assist during Buffalo’s record-breaking snowstorm in 2017.
Mooney has strengthened CSEA by organizing multiple units including the Long Beach Housing Authority, all full-time and part-time Long Beach lifeguard units, the CSEA Long Beach Sanitary Districts, and the Oceanside Fire District, totaling well over 500 new union members.
In March 2024, Mooney expanded his activism reach when he became CSEA Long Island Region Executive Vice President. In May 2026, he assumed the role of CSEA Long Island Region President after the position became vacant.As Region President, Mooney represents more than 45,000 members.
Mooney is also a Long Island Federation of Labor vice president and a member of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), where he continuously advocates for equal and fair opportunity for all, beginning in the workplace.
Mooney’s principles have been the compass that guides his life; he will continue to lead with heart and serve the people in pursuit of a brighter future.
