Safety & Health
Each day, more than 14 workers are killed on the job and thousands more are seriously injured or diagnosed with illnesses as a result of work. A safe and healthy workplace is not a dream. It’s the law. All employers in New York state are required to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards. Your Occupational Safety and Health Department is here to help ensure your right to a safe and healthy workplace. CSEA has one of the largest and most comprehensive safety departments in the country whose goal is to help protect you.

Early and proper removal of ticks is key to your safety
Each year, the volume and severity of tick-borne illnesses seem to increase. Sadly, tick bites are very usual in New York and the three most common ticks in the state (Deer a.k.a., a Black-legged tick, the Dog tick, and the Lone Star tick) can carry bacteria or viruses that can cause a fatal illness. CSEA is here to educate and protect you from the dangers of ticks.

School district workplace safety
Through CSEA’s political advocacy on behalf of CSEA’s school district members, the New York State Public Employer Workplace Violence Prevention Act was recently amended to include school districts, which were previously exempt. Learn the answers to frequently asked questions on this topic at our school district workplace safety page.
Hurt at work?
More than 5.2 million workers are injured at work or contract work related illnesses each year. If you are hurt or have been made ill at work, you deserve compensation. It is important that you properly report and document your injury or illness to receive just compensation. Our union is here to help protect your right to compensation. Your employer cannot discriminate against you for filing a workers’ compensation claim and there are protections under NYS Workers’ Compensation Law.

If you’re hurt on the job, CSEA has your back!

Safety activist
One-hour program that drives right to the point of what is expected of a safety steward, how to spot hazards, and how you are protected under safety and health laws and regulations. Safety activists are the first line of defense in the workplace to protect our members from on-the-job hazards. Safety activist training is available on-demand and at CSEA conferences and workshops.
Report a safety issue or concern to CSEA
If you are in IMMINENT DANGER (a situation that will cause death or serious physical harm), notify your local leadership immediately and contact your OSH Specialist. If you are unable to get immediate assistance, you can report the hazard to the nearest DOL/PESH office as an imminent danger complaint and they will prioritize it over all program activities. Reporting a safety issue is the first step to correct your problem. You should always report a safety concern directly with your local leadership. You can also report a concern online with your OSH Specialist. The concern may be reported confidentially upon request.
