1. Legislative Session Ends
Around 1:30 a.m. Friday, the State Senate adjourned from session for the year. The Assembly continues to work into Friday evening to wrap up remaining business. CSEA has had an extremely successful year legislatively, achieving several victories on important bills for members, including:
- Provides Court Officers with the ability to retire at age 55 with 30 years of service. S.10590 (Jackson) / A.11387 (Pheffer Amato).
- Provides municipalities with the option to offer a 25-year retirement plan to 911 and emergency dispatchers. S.7635-B (Ryan) / A.9162-A (Pheffer Amato).
- Provides municipalities with the option to offer full pay and medical coverage to probation officers when they are injured in the line of duty. S.8837 (Hinchey) / A.2535 (Paulin).
- Requires Local Social Services Districts to provide panic buttons to social services caseworkers who do home visits. S.6987-A (Harckham) / A.7833-A (Levenberg).
- Align supervisions requirements for home-based child care providers with what is required of child care centers. S.9728 (Brouk) / A.10025 (Clark).
- Prohibits the impersonation of a union or a union representative. S.9577-A (Ramos) / A.10835-A (Griffin).
- Authorizes the use of body scanners in OCFS juvenile detention facilities. S.8963 (Skoufis) / A.9333 (Hevesi).
- Prohibits the state from outsourcing public work during a declared hiring freeze. S.4773 (Ryan) / A.1396 (Eachus).
While these bills still need to be signed into law, getting these bills passed both houses is a massive victory that was made possible by the hard work and advocacy of CSEA members across the State. Thank you to everyone who wrote emails, made calls, and met with legislators to help get these bills over the finish line!
2. Tier 6 Reform Webinar
CSEA has secured the most significant reforms to Tier 6 since it became law. This is major progress that will put real money back in members’ pockets and strengthen retirement security for the future. This week, we held a webinar to explain what was included in these reforms. 3. Primary Elections — June 23
We need to vote for Tom DiNapoli on June 23!
Tom has been our friend for many years. He has guarded our pension funds from those who would use our money for their own purposes. If you are a registered Democrat, get to the polls and vote to protect your pension. Vote for Tom DiNapoli and ask your coworkers to do the same. - June 8 — Deadline to change your address for the primary
- June 13 — Last day to register to vote
- June 13–21 — Early voting period
- June 22 — Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
- June 23 — Primary Election Day and final day to submit mail-in ballots
