This Week in Albany- June 6, 2025

1. Gov. Hochul Honors Robert Bornt

Last week, CSEA member and Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance Supervisor Robert Bornt passed away after suffering catastrophic injuries related to a work zone intrusion in Pittstown. Gov. Kathy Hochul directed that flags on all state government buildings be flown at half-staff in his honor on Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7. This is yet another tragedy in a series of deaths and injuries that have occurred in and around work zones this year. CSEA is continuing to push for policy changes to keep highway workers safe.

2. Federal Budget Update

It was reported this week that the U.S. Senate is considering cuts to Medicare, in addition to cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, to help offset the cost of a massive tax cut for billionaires. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has set a goal of getting a bill passed by July 4. However, Republicans have a very slim majority, and can only lose 3 votes on any proposed budget package. Several Senators are already signaling problems with the current version of the bill, citing concerns about the impact on the nation’s deficit.

3. CSEA-Supported Child Care Bill Passes

This week, the State Senate passed A.4003/S.4929, which means the bill has now passed both houses of the legislature! This bill aligns infant supervision standards for home-based child care providers, many of whom are represented by CSEA, with what is already done for child care centers. This will reduce the burden of excessive staffing requirements on home-based providers and will improve access to infant care across the state. Now, the bill heads to Governor Hochul, who has until the end of the year to sign or veto the legislation.

4. Delgado Launches Gubernatorial Bid

This week, Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado announced his intention to run for Governor against Kathy Hochul in 2026. Delgado has indicated that he will complete his term as Lieutenant Governor, despite divisions between him and Hochul.

5. Register to Vote

Primary day for local elections is on June 24! The last day to register is June 14. Register to vote, check your registration, and see CSEA’s endorsed candidates here. Local elections decide who makes decisions about public services, schools, infrastructure, and who sits across from us at the bargaining table. CSEA members can have an outsized impact in these elections, so don’t forget to vote!

6. Next Week

The State Legislature will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This is the last scheduled week of session, but we anticipate that the legislature will continue to meet into the week of June 16.
