Mary E. Sullivan: The Power of Your Vote

Voting remains one of the most powerful ways we make our voices heard, especially when so many challenges stand in the way.

This is especially true as a recent Supreme Court decision has weakened key protections of the Voting Rights Act. These rulings have made it harder to challenge racially discriminatory voting maps that dilute minority voting power, undermining decades of civil rights progress.

These decisions have already emboldened several states to redraw congressional maps in ways that could reduce Black voter representation ahead of upcoming midterm elections. This comes on top of other efforts, at both the state and national levels, to restrict voting.

For CSEA members, one of our greatest strengths has always been showing up to vote. We vote at a higher rate than the general public, and that power is noticed by decision-makers. That is why our member-driven endorsements of candidates are so influential.

June 23 is primary election day. CSEA proudly endorsed Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli for re-election. We all know Tom and the work he does to protect our pensions. Even if you are not registered as a Democrat, there are still ways you can help Tom win this primary by visiting cseany.org/dinapoli.

Most importantly, stay active, stay informed and make your voice count.
