Mary E. Sullivan: Year of challenges, year of strength

As another year draws to a close, I find myself thinking about all the ways our union has shown up for one another. This year has been filled with challenges but also with strength. We have defended vital public services and programs from reckless federal cuts. We made calls, sent emails, rallied and lobbied our elected officials. We let lawmakers know that every cut to public services hurts the communities we live in and serve.

As we move into a new year, we will keep fighting with renewed strength and commitment –because that is who we are. Our diversity, our solidarity, and our pride in the jobs we do every day give us the power to come together in one strong voice.

From the school employees who keep our kids safe, to the health care workers who care for the most vulnerable, to the public employees who maintain the infrastructure that keeps our state running, CSEA members have proven time and again that New York works because we do.

This year, we also look to the future. Our union members have been learning, growing and stepping into leadership roles in every region. The energy and commitment I saw at our Annual Delegates Meeting told me that the next generation of activists is ready to lead – and to ensure that the rights we’ve fought for are not only protected but expanded.

I want to thank every one of you for your dedication and strength in keeping our union moving forward. On behalf of CSEA, I wish you and your loved ones happy holidays. Let’s carry our momentum into 2026, stronger, more united, and ready for what’s ahead.
