This Week in Albany – May 15, 2026

1. Budget Negotiations Continue – Extenders Passed

This week, legislators passed extenders to keep the state government running until May 18. Despite the governor announcing a budget deal, a final agreement has still not been reached. In addition, the legislative session is scheduled to end on June 4. The lateness of the budget will make it increasingly difficult for the legislature to act on other legislation before the end of session, including several CSEA priorities.

2. Take Action: Fairness for Injured Probation Officers

CSEA probation officers are fighting for equity, and they need your support. If a probation officer is injured on the job, they receive only workers’ compensation benefits. This is despite the fact probation officers are law enforcement officials, while other law enforcement professionals, including police officers and correction officers, receive full pay when injured in the line of duty.

CSEA is fighting to give counties the option to provide these benefits to probation officers, but the state legislature must pass legislation to make that possible.

Send an email to your state senator and assembly member and urge them to pass this legislation before the end of the session using the link.

4. School District Elections

School district elections and budget votes are Tuesday, May 19. Because turnout is typically low, CSEA members can have an outsized impact on helping pass school budgets and electing CSEA-supported school board candidates.

CSEA has made several endorsements in the upcoming school district elections on May 19. Be sure to visit our website to view endorsements in your region and support CSEA-backed candidates and school budgets.

5. Next Week

The State Legislature is scheduled to meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Another budget extender must pass by Monday to ensure state employees on the Administration payroll are paid on time.
