This Week in Albany – April 17, 2026

1. Budget Negotiations Continue — Extenders Passed

There is still no agreement on a final State Budget. According to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, “we’re in the middle of the middle,” referring to progress of budget negotiations but says that incremental progress is being made. This week, the State Legislature passed two budget extenders, which cover payroll and keep state government operating through Monday, April 20. Lawmakers are expected to return Monday to pass another extender to ensure Administration payroll members are paid on time.

3. Primary Elections

Primary elections will be held on June 23, 2026. The deadline to register to vote in the primaries is June 13. Make sure to check you registration, or register to vote before the deadline. New York State has closed primaries, meaning you must be registered as a member of a party to vote in that party’s primary election.

CSEA has already made several endorsements, most notably in the primary race for New York State Comptroller. New York’s public employees and retirees deserve a Comptroller who will fight every day to protect their hard-earned pensions. CSEA has proudly endorsed Tom DiNapoli because he has done that for decades, safeguarding the retirement fund and making sure your retirement security is never left to chance.

4. Next Week

The State Legislature is scheduled to meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Another extender must pass on Monday to ensure Administration payroll members are paid on time.
